Overview

The Industrial Revolution was a long transformation in energy, production, transport and work rather than a single burst of invention. It began earliest in Britain during the eighteenth century, then developed along different paths across Europe, North America and other regions.

Coal, steam and mechanisation increased output, but factories depended on global cotton, capital, colonial markets and large workforces. Growth came with dangerous labour, polluted cities and an unequal distribution of wealth.

Why Britain industrialised first

Accessible coal, commercial agriculture, high wages in some sectors, credit networks and imperial trade all mattered. No single cause explains the transition, and historians debate the relative weight of science, institutions, empire and resources.

Textiles, coal, iron and steam

Cotton manufacturing combined mechanised spinning and weaving with plantation-grown fibre produced by enslaved labour. Coke-smelted iron, deeper mines and improved steam engines expanded the scale and location of production.

Factories and disciplined time

Factories concentrated machines and workers under employers' control. Rules, clocks and supervision changed labour, although domestic workshops and skilled craft survived alongside the factory system.

Cities, health and reform

Manchester, Birmingham and other industrial centres grew faster than housing and sanitation. Epidemic disease, overcrowding and dangerous work drove investigation, protest and gradual public-health and factory legislation.

Living standards debate

Real wages and consumption rose over the long term, but averages conceal gender, region, unemployment and the loss of customary rights. Historians therefore ask who benefited, when improvement began and what costs conventional measures omit.

    The design improved steam-engine fuel efficiency.

    Edmund Cartwright patented a mechanised loom.

  5. Liverpool and Manchester Railway

    Inter-city passenger and freight rail demonstrated a new transport system.

  6. Factory Act

    Parliament expanded regulation of child labour in textile mills.

  7. Mines Act

    Women and girls and boys under ten were barred from underground mine work.
