Ada Lovelace: life and legacy

Lovelace studied mathematics within the constraints imposed on an aristocratic Victorian woman. Her translation and extensive notes on Luigi Menabrea's account of the Analytical Engine included a method for calculating Bernoulli numbers. She recognised that a programmable machine might manipulate symbols as well as numbers.
