Alan Turing: life and legacy
Education and computability
Turing studied mathematics at Cambridge and Princeton. His 1936 paper defined a universal abstract machine to clarify what it means for a problem to be computable. The work became foundational to theoretical computer science.
Wartime cryptanalysis
At Bletchley Park, Turing worked principally on German naval Enigma and helped develop methods and machines for testing possible settings. Intelligence success depended on Polish breakthroughs, operators, engineers, captured material and a large organisation; no individual 'broke Enigma' alone.
Computing and artificial intelligence
After the war Turing designed an electronic stored-program computer at the National Physical Laboratory and worked on the Manchester computers. His 1950 paper proposed an imitation game as a practical way to discuss machine intelligence.
Prosecution and death
Police investigation of a burglary exposed Turing's relationship with Arnold Murray. Convicted of gross indecency in 1952, he accepted hormonal treatment rather than prison and lost security access. He died from cyanide poisoning in 1954; the inquest found suicide.
Legacy
Official apology and pardon recognised the injustice done to Turing, though thousands of other men were convicted under the same laws. Public memory should celebrate his work without turning collective scientific and intelligence history into a solitary-genius myth.
