Decolonisation, civil conflict and Cold War intervention in Vietnam and neighbouring states.
The Vietnam War grew from resistance to French colonial rule, Vietnamese civil conflict and Cold War intervention. It involved Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia and cannot be reduced to a contest between the United States and communism.
North Vietnamese and revolutionary forces defeated South Vietnam and its US ally in 1975 after decades of war and enormous civilian suffering.
The Viet Minh declared independence in 1945 and defeated France in 1954. Geneva agreements divided Vietnam temporarily, but planned nationwide elections did not occur.
The United States backed South Vietnam and escalated ground and air war after 1964. Military superiority did not create a legitimate or durable political settlement.
Bombing, displacement, chemical defoliation and massacre affected civilians across the region. Anti-war movements and media influenced politics but did not alone cause withdrawal.
