Republic and polarisation

The Second Republic attempted reforms in landholding, church-state relations, education and the army. Supporters saw democratisation; opponents feared revolution and loss of established authority.

Political violence and inflammatory rhetoric deepened distrust, but civil war was not inevitable. The decisive break came when military officers launched a coup in July 1936 and failed to seize the whole country.

War and revolution

Spain divided between Republican and Nationalist zones. In some Republican areas workers and peasants collectivised workplaces and land, while competing left-wing organisations argued over revolution and central control.

Nationalist forces united conservative, monarchist and fascist groups under Francisco Franco. Repression accompanied conquest, targeting officials, organisers and communities associated with the Republic.

International intervention

Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy supplied aircraft, troops and weapons to the Nationalists. The Soviet Union aided the Republic, and International Brigades attracted volunteers from many countries.

Britain and France promoted non-intervention, but the policy was repeatedly violated and disadvantaged the Republic. Foreign intervention mattered greatly without turning Spaniards into mere proxies.

Defeat and dictatorship

Nationalist forces captured territory methodically, while Republican division, shortages and diplomatic isolation weakened resistance. Barcelona fell in early 1939 and Madrid soon followed.

Franco's dictatorship imprisoned, executed and marginalised opponents and used controlled memory of the war to legitimate rule. Democratic transition after his death required negotiation over how the conflict should be publicly remembered.

Why It Matters

The war reveals how democratic breakdown, social conflict and international intervention can reinforce one another, while keeping Spanish agency at the centre of the explanation.
