Destroying plural politics
After Hitler became chancellor in January 1933, emergency decree, arrest and intimidation crippled political opposition. The Enabling Act allowed cabinet legislation without parliamentary control.
Trade unions were destroyed, parties banned and public bodies coordinated with Nazi goals. Conservative officials who expected to contain Hitler instead helped a dictatorship gain institutional reach.
The racial community
The regime promised unity but defined belonging through exclusion. Jewish people, Roma and Sinti, disabled people, Black Germans and others faced policies justified by racial ideology and pseudoscience.
The Nuremberg Laws removed Jewish citizenship rights and regulated intimate life. Kristallnacht in 1938 marked organised nationwide violence, mass arrest and destruction that officials then forced victims to finance.
Participation and constraint
Propaganda shaped public space, but Germans did not respond identically. Career advantage, social pressure, belief, fear and selective approval all influenced behaviour.
Youth and women's organisations encouraged prescribed roles while workplaces and leisure programmes linked everyday life to the regime. Nonconformity ranged from private scepticism to organised resistance and carried very different risks.
War and genocide
Conquest in eastern Europe intensified forced labour, starvation policy and mass shooting. The invasion of the Soviet Union became a racial war in which military, police and civilian agencies cooperated.
The Holocaust developed through deportation, ghettoisation, shooting and killing centres. Explaining administrative radicalisation does not lessen leadership responsibility; it shows how ideology became mass murder through institutions and collaborators.
