Educated medieval Europeans inherited the ancient understanding that the Earth was spherical. Writers could point to astronomical observations and established authorities when describing its shape.

This did not mean every person possessed the same geographical knowledge, nor that medieval cosmology resembled modern science. The point is narrower: a flat Earth was not the standard learned position.

The myth became popular in later accounts that portrayed the past as a simple struggle between ignorant religion and enlightened science.

Correcting the myth helps us recognise that historical people organised knowledge differently without being caricatures of stupidity.
