Caesar rose through the competitive politics of the late Republic and formed an informal alliance with Pompey and Crassus. His conquest of Gaul gave him wealth, soldiers and political leverage.

Crossing the Rubicon in 49 BC began civil war. Caesar defeated Pompey's forces and accumulated extraordinary offices and honours after returning to Rome.

His assassination on the Ides of March 44 BC did not restore the old Republic. Further civil wars led eventually to the rule of his adopted heir Octavian, later Augustus.
