Marie Curie: life and legacy
Early life and education
Maria Skłodowska was born in Warsaw in 1867 under Russian imperial rule. Barred by gender from the city's university, she studied through underground education and worked as a governess. She moved to Paris in 1891, enrolled at the Sorbonne and completed degrees in physics and mathematics while living in difficult financial conditions.
Research partnership
She married physicist Pierre Curie in 1895. Building on Henri Becquerel's work, Marie investigated uranium emissions and coined the term radioactivity. The Curies processed tonnes of pitchblende residues under arduous conditions, identifying evidence for the new elements polonium and radium. Their measurements changed understanding of the atom.
Recognition and institutions
Marie Curie shared the 1903 Nobel Prize in Physics with Pierre Curie and Becquerel. After Pierre's death in 1906 she took his university chair, becoming the Sorbonne's first woman professor. Her 1911 Nobel Prize in Chemistry recognised the discovery of radium and polonium and the isolation and study of radium.
War work
During the First World War Curie organised mobile radiography units that brought X-ray imaging closer to wounded soldiers. She trained operators and worked to expand the service. The programme illustrates how scientific expertise, logistics and medical practice interacted; the familiar phrase 'Little Curies' should not hide the work of many technicians and clinicians.
Exposure, death and ethics
The hazards of ionising radiation were poorly understood during much of Curie's career. She died in 1934 from aplastic anaemia, probably associated with prolonged exposure, though wartime X-ray work was also significant. Her surviving papers remain radioactive and require controlled handling.
Legacy and historical debate
Curie became a symbol of scientific dedication and of women overcoming institutional barriers. Heroic accounts can nevertheless understate collaboration, industrial labour and the networks that supplied materials. Her work also opened medical possibilities and serious risks, making her career part of the history of both discovery and scientific responsibility.
