Leon Trotsky: life and legacy
Life and career
Trotsky joined the Bolsheviks in 1917 and chaired the Petrograd Soviet during the seizure of power. He negotiated Russia's exit from the First World War and built the Red Army during civil war. Defeated by Stalin's coalition after Lenin's death, he was exiled and murdered in Mexico by a Soviet agent.
Historical context
Revolution emerged from war, social conflict and state collapse rather than one leader's design. Civil war then hardened institutions of coercion and one-party rule.
Legacy and interpretation
Leon Trotsky's reputation has been shaped by commemoration, political argument and the survival of unequal evidence. A responsible biography compares contemporary records with later interpretation, recognises people affected by their decisions and avoids reducing broad change to one famous life.
